Matt has joined CFGI’s Tax practice as the leader in the financial services sector. He will be providing tax accounting, reporting, compliance and consulting services to financial services clients across a variety of sub-sectors. He will also provide financial consulting services including interim management to companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. He has over 30 years of experience in both industry/corporate and public accounting, serving in both tax and non-tax roles.

Matt brings valuable experience to his clients having served as the Head of Tax at several large public companies in the financial services arena. He had responsibility for overall tax function management at KeyCorp, Sun Life U.S. and Lincoln Financial Group, with oversight of tax strategy, risk management, reporting, planning, audits and operations at each of the companies. In addition to his industry roles, Matt was a Director in PwC’s banking and capital markets tax practice for five years serving a variety of audit and non-audit clients.

Beyond his tax roles, Matt served as the VP and Head of Global Investment Finance at Sun Life Financial, handling the accounting, reporting and operations for the company’s $100 billion investment portfolio. He was also appointed the CFO of the U.S. operations of Sun Life with responsibility for the finance, actuarial and capital management areas. While at Lincoln he also managed the Investment Accounting and Operations organization and a corporate Financial Planning & Analysis team which focused on management reporting, budgeting and expense management, earnings analysis and financial close support.

Matt’s skills include tax accounting, financial reporting for taxes (ASC 740), and compliance; tax strategy, planning, and risk management; audits and controversy resolution; mergers & acquisitions, including tax restructuring and integration; insurance industry and Subchapter L technical tax matters; accounting, reporting and operational activities for investments; and financial planning & analysis. His industry experience includes insurance, banking, consumer and commercial finance, leasing, payment services, asset management and private equity.

Matt has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from Siena College. He formerly served as the Chair and Vice Chair for the American Council of Life Insurers Tax Committee and is a past speaker at insurance and banking tax conferences, as well as having served on the board of the Bank Tax Institute.
