Today is the first day of the Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean Lunar New Year. This year, it is the year of the PIG. The Lunar New Year is celebrated by countries and regions including China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Mauritius, Philippines and by Asian communities around the world. This celebration lasts for 15 days; each day has its resemblance.
During this period family, extended relatives and friends spend time together over food, drinks, mahjong/card games, and general catch up. Elders/working class adults will give out red packets to the younger generation as a gesture of good wishes. Working class adults also give red packets to elderly parents or grandparents as a gesture of appreciation and love. RED and Gold are the favorite colors, especially during this season.
